The Neolithic period is the late Stone Age, the time when Lithuania had the warmest climate in several thousand years. Huge complexes of lakes and rivers were rich in fish, among them pike that were several metres long! Fishing was known for thousands of years, but it was not until the Neolithic period that riverbanks were filled with fishermen utilising harpoons, pitch forks, fishing baskets and nets. For the majority of families of that time, fish was the main source of protein.
