AXES IN THE EARLY IRON AGE
New traditions of making axes
Though we have reached the end of the Stone Age and another four thousand years remain until today, let us take a look at one of the earliest tools in the entire history of humanity—an axe. Its shape changed only slightly over the course of time, and it was in the Stone Age that nicely shaped, polished stone axes began to be produced. Having become familiar with the first metal artefacts, people started to make stone imitations of metal axes and even polished a fake “cast seam”. This allows archaeologists to claim they have firm evidence that the wish of humans to make an impression, to own extraordinary valuable objects—and to show off—appeared at that time, or perhaps even earlier.
