CURONIAN PINS
The largest pins one has ever seen
People have worn various bracelets, rings, neck decorations or belts for thousands of years, but pins are an element of Baltic jewellery that is almost out of fashion. Once such pins would have been worn by every member of a family, and they were popular gifts. A pin was a very practical piece of jewellery and pins of different shapes and decorations were popular among the different Baltic tribes. But Curonian pins are considered extraordinary because of their size—they are the most massive of all pins found in the territory of Lithuania. Interestingly, these large pins were worn mainly by women! It is thought that the pins were used to fasten massive clothes or fur cloaks. These pieces of jewellery look silver, but for the most part they were tin-plated to create the impression of silver.
