Baltic tribes adorned themselves with shiny brass jewellery for several hundred years, and such ornaments gradually became available to people of different social status. But one time a merchant returned from his travels to the south with something that local people had never seen before—coloured jewellery! These were impressive brass brooches with red, orange and blue enamelled details. Though local artisans soon learned from the merchants how the artefacts were given such colours and how to apply these techniques in Baltic jewellery, only about 50 pieces of jewellery decorated in this manner have been discovered in Lithuania to date! You’ve probably let your eyes rest on the triangular enamel brooch, and not by accident! It is the only artefact of its kind in the entire Baltic region.
