HORSE GRAVES
The special friendship between humans and horses
Beginning in the Stone Age, people had several faithful animal friends. The dog was the first tamed animal and still remains man’s best friend, but in the Iron Age, the extraordinary friendship between humans and horses arose in these lands. In the territory of Lithuania, many graves in which people are buried together with their horses and riding implements are found, and sometimes, a separate burial place or even separate graveyards were dug for horses! Even if a horse was not buried, its gear would sometimes be placed inside a person’s grave. Most often horses were buried young, with their entire magnificent gear. It is not doubted that the custom to bury the horse together with its owner was a very significant part of the funerary ritual, inseparable from the concept of life after death. Quite likely, it was believed in those times that a horse would take its rider to the beyond. It is speculated that some horses were buried alive while still good for riding.
