EARLY POTTERY
The most magnificent ceramics in prehistoric Lithuania
Look at these shards of the earliest pots. Nobody knows the origin of the saying that a broken pot brings good luck, but finding such shards certainly makes archaeologists very happy! In Lithuania these kinds of pots were made by gluing together multiple strips of clay, as the potter’s wheel would not be invented for another five thousand years. These pots were unusual—they had pointed bottoms and would be planted, with a rotating movement, into sand or another soft soil. The flat-bottomed pots that we use today appeared later. Looking ahead, we’d like to draw your attention to the decoration of Stone Age pots: compared to other periods, Neolithic ceramics were the most decorative of all the pottery produced in prehistoric Lithuania.
